Statutory water and sewerage sit first in most minds and often first in the ground. Cast iron, later plastic, and abandoned mains that nobody cut off cleanly all appear on London, Manchester and Glasgow plots. A record may show the live main. It will not always show the dead one.

Gas has been inserted, abandoned and rerouted through several generations of polyethylene. Electromagnetic locating will not see a plastic insertion without a tracer. GPR might. That is a Type B conversation, not a “the gas board said it was here” conversation.

Electricity ranges from low-voltage services to high-voltage corridors that control a design even when they are not in the excavation. Congested signals in a Birmingham inner street can produce ghost traces. Quality levels exist so those ghosts are not drawn as facts.

Telecoms are the layer that grew fastest: ducts, fibre, and private networks into basements and campuses. They are poorly represented on older statutory plans and poorly behaved for locators. Radar and cover lifting do more of the work.

Private heating, private water and landlord electricity are the usual surprises. Name the estates or building owner in the brief. Then let utility mapping put every generation on one grid. City pages for Manchester and Cardiff describe local grain; the mix of services is national.

Abandoned apparatus is a UK speciality. Cut-and-capped mains, wartime repairs and “temporary” diversions that became permanent all sit in the same streets. Records often forget them. Detection sometimes finds them. Quality levels should admit when a feature is unidentified.

Street furniture is Type C evidence, not a complete map. A telecoms cabinet tells you something is near. It does not give you the duct route. Do not let a photograph of a cabinet replace a survey.

River edges, dock fill and made ground change what radar can see. City waterfronts in Glasgow and Cardiff are the usual illustrations. The mix of services is the same; the physics is not.

When you brief a survey, list the services you care about most — a live HV, a trunk water, a fibre spine — and accept that others will still be mapped at whatever quality level the ground allows. Wanting every service to be QL-A is how you buy a trench, not a specification.

District heating and private water are the networks that statutory letters forget most often. Campuses and estate landlords are the usual owners. Write their names in the brief before you complain that Type B “missed” a pipe nobody mentioned.

Abandoned metallic plant will still ring to a locator. That is useful and dangerous. Quality levels and notes should say when a trace looks abandoned. An excavator should still treat it as live until someone competent says otherwise.

City pages on this site exist so those mixes have a geography. The services themselves are national. Specify the method once. Change only the access plan.
